Windows 10 Panic

Flipping the Windows 10 panic on its head!

Turning panic to business opportunity

I’ve read so many articles on the panic to move to Windows 10…. in fact we’ve published a few ourselves! So, it got me thinking about trying to swing the message from ‘panic stations’ to ‘how to turn this into an opportunity’.

Current estimates indicate that 60% of big businesses are still to move to Windows 10 and 86% of organisations are yet to complete their migrations. So, where’s the good news story for those who are still to migrate?

Regarding Windows 10 adoption we tend to find that businesses fall into one of three categories:

  1. The Trailblazers:
    • Early adopters, first to migrate to Windows 10 and happy to adapt as they go.
  2. The Steady Eddie’s:
    • Migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 and then to Windows 10 is just business as usual, it was scheduled years ago, and it isn’t a panic.
  3. The Catchers Up!
    • The starting pistol has been pulled, deadlines approaching, and you’re simply trying to hit numbers on a best intended project plan, with pressure from senior managers across the business to deliver.

So, as of today with 60% of larger businesses still to migrate the majority of companies are either category 2 (on their journey) or category 3 (trying to catch-up. However, the benefit they have is that they can embrace the invaluable learning of those, the 40%, who have already completed their migration to Windows 10.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and experience is invaluable

Let’s start by looking into the future. Visualise yourself sat in a meeting room with your peers, following your Windows 10 migration what would you talk about?  Possibly:

  • What hurdles did you encounter?
  • If you did it again, what would you do differently?
  • What were the biggest issues and time-wasters?

And you would have countless other topics that you would be likely to cover resulting you’re your migration journey.

From APPtechnology’s own real-world experience, obtained from working with hundreds of migrating clients, the biggest topics and budget thieves you are likely to see and discuss in this meeting are:

  1. Expensive contractors that were not busy because they had no work ahead of them
  2. Wasted packages that were created for deployment that were never used (because they were either superseded or retired)
  3. That there was time wasted kicking the ‘problem applications’ down the road to the end of the project which cost thousands in necessary development costs and often included applications that we knew would be retired
  4. That you did not know what was out there and ended up having to ask for more and more budget to ‘mop up’ the users and their applications you missed.

So, rather than panic that Windows 7 end-of-life is near and you have yet to migrate to Windows 10, by taking on-board this and the learning of others you can turn the panic on its head flipping it to business opportunity.
