In this exclusive presentation, he talks about the benefits of hybrid license management as well as the bigger picture of bring-your-own-license management for all commercial software and how to save money by doing it right.
Big organizations today typically have many environments – data centres, as well as workloads that have been moved from on-prem to Azure, AWS or Google, and also SaaS (Software as a Service). And with such complex infrastructures, the main focus for asset management is managing compute VMs, containers and databases, keeping track of which are running and which licensing model is used for each workload: bring-your-own-license versus pay-per-use.
In the License Playground
For different combinations of software vendors and cloud providers there can be different licensing rules and also restrictions, but the goal of smart hybrid licensing is to bring everything together, literally on one screen. Using smart hybrid licensing methods, software compliance can be simplified and cost management can be controlled by using licenses in the most effective way to reduce cloud costs.
Christian looks into what he describes as the "playground" of the bring-you-own-license game - the world's largest software vendors and cloud providers and how you can or cannot combine them - for example, whilst you can use Oracle licenses in OCI, you cannot use Oracle licenses in IBM or Google Cloud. In other cases, license activation will bind your license to a particular workload for a minimum of 90 days even if you were stop using it for that purpose the next day.
